CHOSEN AREA

The big draw was a day long event where I created a scaled model to explore materiality, spaces and structure to improve my building design further from a user's point of perspective.

The chosen area includes indoor and outdoor space. The big model is being used to explore and analyse users experience and these two spaces  differentiate to create different user experience.

-

-

PROS

- the terrace has views to the markets and the park.

- the space allows users to use space informally. For example, a person can walk around, sit and talk however they like. Therefore creating a 'market' like feeling where people are not supposed to act in a certain way, such as a restaurant.

- complete freedom for the user to use the space. People are able to shift furniture around according to their needs.

- people are able to see other people when on the stairs.

- cooking classes and indoor restaurant area can be seen from the terrace and vise versa.

CONS

- glazed area around the stairs are taking a lot of space

- open roof may not allow all day use depending on the weather

- lighting seems very old fashioned

- area all together seems separated from markets downstairs

Precedent

PROS

- aesthetically pleasing. Timber cladding can make the building more beautiful that may attract more people

- glazing on two sides to maximise sunlight penetration during daytime.

- hidden artificial lights, hence more intimate lighting to create a right mood setting during the evening time.

- people that are approaching the restaurant from the Trafford Grove are able to see activities that are taking place inside the restaurant.

- strong inside to outside material connection

- timber cladding can set a level of privacy

Key Points
CONS

- weak connection with markets.

- no views to the park or markets.

- weak roof supporting system.

- artificial lighting fitted within walls can be uncomfortable for users when sitting down.

1. Restaurant needs a strong connection with the markets.

2. Terrace Roof should be glazed as it rains a lot in Manchester.

3. Stairs in the middle of the terrace can be annoying for customers. hence creating an unpleasant experience for them.

4. People may not feel comfortable by being exposed to others while eating

5. Opportunity to redesign the roof that fits better within the design

6. Are tilted walls necessary?

7. Ceiling and cladding design can be explored further
